The effect of social transfers in Europe An empirical analysis using Generalised Lorenz Curves

'This paper aims at examining the impact of different transfers on the income distribution in European countries. Therefore an empirical analysis using generalised Lorenz curve comparisons is carried out. The obtained results are investigated by relating them to a classification of European social transfer systems.' European schemes of social assistance An empirical analysis of set-ups and distributive impacts

Die Verfasserinnen analysieren den Verteilungseffekt unterschiedlicher institutioneller Strukturen von Sozialhilfe in Europa. Hierzu werden die einzelnen Strukturen und Programme nach ihrer regulativen Ausgestaltung und ihrem Zentralisationsgrad klassifiziert. Auf der Basis von LIS-Daten wird abschliessend am Beispiel von fuenf europaeischen Staaten untersucht, wie sich die Zugehoerigkeit eines Sozialhilfesystems zu den genannten Klassen auf Effektivitaet und Verteilungseffekte auswirkt. For this purpose, two sets of classifications of European schemes of social assistance are introduced that classify the systems according to regulatory arrangements and degree of centralisation, respectively. Subsequently, the distributive impacts of five selected EU systems are calculated on the basis of LIS data and their relationship to class assignment is investigated.'
